In Chennai (aka Madras), India, there is a man named Michael R. Hubert who has a
big heart, and big dreams. That is why he created a non-profit group called in the
Indian tongue, SHABNAM, which means "latter rain;" he aims to be the first refreshing
rain after a dry spell. Hubert will not turn away a needy child in the villages
around the city of Chennai. At first, he took in children who had no parents and
gave them a place to sleep and food to eat. It became obvious that he would also
need to educate these children, and so he added schooling. Because the need is so
great, the roster grew quickly. And even children who have parents are interested
in attending the school during the day since education is often difficult to find
in India.
The population of the orphanage and school has grown to include more than 70 students,
plus teachers who give their lives to serve these children. But the rented building
that houses the orphanage and school hasn't grown, and is woefully inadequate for
the needs. That is why Hubert has put together the a plan for a new facility for
the children. Here are his words...
Vision
Children are made to love.
Mission
To build a new habitat for the helpless.
About Shabnam Resources (SRT)
Shabnam Resources Trust is a registered non-profit charity focusing on children's
welfare in rural and semi urban areas in India. More focused towards catering to
the needs of children, destitute and senior citizens
Major Activities and Background
Shabnam Resources Trust works to save children from child labor and child abuse,
especially from rag picking and working in hazardous brick industries, primarily
in the Tiruvallur district near Madras, India, an area where child labor and trafficking
is rampant. Shabnam Resources Trust rescues these children, mostly orphans, and
provides for their physical needs and for an education that will give them a future.
The brick-making industry poses many dangers for child laborers. Some drown in the
mud or suffer other serious physical injuries. Working in the oppressively hot weather
of southern India poses the additional danger of heat exhaustion. Orphaned children
face these dangers every day for slave wages to survive.
In rural India, primary public education is very ineffective, little more than baby-sitting,
while most private schools are expensive and ultra-competitive. Shabnam Resources
Trust features an alternative school that provides an effective education at minimal
cost.
Objectives of the Project
- To construct a home-like habitat for children and dropouts
- To provide a home-like environment for healthy growth of children
- To use these same facilities for education, skill development, overall growth, and
character development
- To provide all forms of care and support till they are independent to care for themselves
Present scenario and justification of project
We care for 32 children in our care home
and about 120 children in the alternative schooling care, 7 physical rehab care
for special children. Our facilities are presently in a small rented place, where
the house owners force us to vacate on the grounds of child nuisance which haunts and
disturbs badly. No adequate bedding and living space, study cum learning place
is so small, No natural environment (garden). In this utmost difficulty child develops
an internal emotional stress which affects his/her holistic abilities and development.
Therefore the need for a constructed building with dormitory, study cum class room,
dining cum recreation, mini library, theme garden would be established. Pathology
of implementation The construction would be done as per the guidelines of an expert
architect who would suggest a eco friendly, disaster resistant building, it would
comfortably house the children and provide a free and peaceful enviro living conditions.
The theme park would aid children to become nature loving and caring. Added benefits
through this infrastructure The class rooms would be used for life coping skill
devn for the drop outs too who can learn the skills to earn and continue their ongoing
studies. mini library would encourage the non formal education among the community
to a greater extent Community involvement with children on awareness programs such
as stop smoking campaign, child rights campaign, stop child abuse campaign , health
related campaigns A child saving bank could be established among children from the
community. It would form as care cum surveillance center to monitor any form of
abuse on child related issues. input cost Fixed costs Building cost (1000 square
