These children come from an urban area. They are from varied backgrounds but most come from troubled homes and some have been abandoned altogether by their families. Children in these situations are often forced into child labor or in some cases, the sex trade. Most often, in this area, children end up in the brick making industry. Shabnam Resources works to keep children out of abusive family situations, off of the streets, and out of child labor. If at all possible, they try to keep children with their families. With these goals in mind they offer 3 levels of care: Day Care, Shelter Care, and Migrant Shelter Care.

The sponsored children fall into the Shelter Care and Migrant Shelter Care categories. The Shelter Care children are being taken care of full time by Shabnam Resources and have essentially been abandoned by their families. The Migrant Shelter Care children are cared for full time for about 9 months out of the year, while their parents migrate somewhere else to work (mostly in the brick making industry). They stay at Shabnam instead of living and working with their parents in situations not suitable for children. Their parents usually return home to Chennai for 3 months during the rainy season (October – December) when brick making work cannot be done. The children usually go home to be with their parents during this time until the parents are ready to migrate away again.

Your sponsorship of an orphan helps them with clothing, medical aid, monthly food supplies, special educational programs and activities, as well as school uniforms and supplies. In addition, a portion of your monthly support will go toward funding a building to be completed in the next few years. This building will replace the currently undersized and inadequate orphanage facility.
