Widows from the villages of Rajupalem and Lanka, Andhra Pradesh (Gampala
Family Ministries)
The widows in this region are in a primarily agricultural area and almost all of
them have skills working on rice paddy plantations. They once worked these fields
for rich land owners making less than a dollar a day. Most are illiterate. Many
now have health issues and little to no resources to work with. Healthy, younger
widows, though physically able to still work, are no longer allowed to work in the
fields or elsewhere due to the caste system. Though this repressive social class
system was officially outlawed in 1950, it is still in place throughout India, especially
in more rural areas. Widows are among those considered “untouchables” and considered
so low that they fall outside of the class system completely.
Your sponsorship of a widow helps them with seasonal clothing, medical aid, and
monthly food items (rice, oil, dhal, salt, tamarind, fruits and vegetables). In
addition, a portion of your monthly support will go toward a widow’s shelter to
be completed within the next few years. If you would like to make a donation to
help support any of the widows please make a note of the Kardias ID (i.e. Wxxx)
and follow the directions on the support page.
After you sponsor a widow you will be given instructions on how you will be able
to contact them.
